    Diabetes is a long-term health condition that affects how your body converts food into energy.

     

    The majority of the food you consume is converted into sugar (also known as glucose) and released into your bloodstream. When the blood sugar rises, your pancreas sends a warning to release insulin. Insulin functions as a key to allow blood sugar into the body's cells for use as energy.

     

    If you have diabetes, the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not use the insulin produced as well as it can. This can lead to major health issues over time such as heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease over time.
