Dexcom G6 Versus G7: Which Is Right for Me?

Both Great Options

If you live with diabetes and use a continuous glucose monitor to regulate your insulin uptake, your endocrinologist has likely been abuzz about the new Dexcom G7 CGM, and for good reason. The G7 is categorically the most accurate CGM on the market today and supports a variety of robust features that stand to greatly improve the quality of life for diabetes patients around the country.

So has it made the G6 obsolete? Is it worth it to make the switch? The answer to this question is going to vary from patient to patient, but make no mistake: Whether you are using the Dexcom G6 or G7, you are using an excellent CGM that is safe, accurate, and well designed.

Let’s compare these two devices and note some of the key differences between them so that you have a better understanding of which device might be right for you.

1. Sensor Size

One of the most significant differences between the Dexcom G6 and G7 is the sensor size. The G6 sensor is larger and bulkier than the G7 sensor, which is about 60% smaller than the G6 sensor. The smaller size of the G7 sensor makes it less noticeable and more comfortable to wear, which can be especially important for people who are more active or have sensitive skin.

2. Insertion Process

The insertion process for the G6 and G7 sensors is also different. The G6 sensor requires a separate applicator device to insert the sensor, while the G7 sensor has a fully integrated insertion system. This means that the G7 sensor can be inserted directly into the skin with one hand, which can be a significant benefit for people who have dexterity issues or difficulty with the insertion process.

3. Calibration

Both the G6 and G7 sensors require calibration, but the calibration process is different for each system. The G6 sensor requires two fingerstick calibrations per day, while the G7 sensor does not require any calibrations. This means that people using the G7 system can rely solely on the CGM readings without the need for additional fingerstick tests.

4. Compatibility with Smartphones

The G6 and G7 sensors are also compatible with different devices. The G6 sensor is compatible with a range of devices, including smartphones, smartwatches, and dedicated receivers. The G7 sensor, on the other hand, is currently only compatible with select smartphones and dedicated receivers at this time. This means that people using the G7 system may need to upgrade their smartphone to ensure compatibility.

5. Compatibility with Insulin Pumps

The Dexcom G7 is currently NOT compatible with any Insulin Delivery Systems. The Dexcom G6 is still the only CGM that will work with Tandem Insulin Pumps and OmniPod systems. For users of Insulin Pumps, they will have to stay with Dexcom G6 until the new Dexcom G7 is compatible.

Once again, both the G6 and the G7 are excellent CGMs. There’s really no wrong choice when it comes to Dexcom CGMs, so it’s important to consider one’s finances and consult with healthcare professionals before making any commitments. We are also more than happy to provide you with information about these amazing devices. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have about CGMs from Dexcom.

Strawberries are coming into season right now, which means they’re at their sweetest and most fragrant. Take advantage of their peak by giving them a starring role in a versatile spinach, feta, and cucumber salad. It’s well-known that fresh strawberries play well in spinach salads. While it’d be easy enough to slice them and toss them alongside baby spinach leaves, putting fresh strawberries in the dressing helps guarantee that bright berry flavor in every bite, and turns the whole dish a gorgeous shade of rose. Add sliced strawberries too, if you like, and call it a double strawberry salad. While you’re at it, feel free to add other ingredients as well. Grilled chicken will turn this salad from a side into a weekday main dish; diced avocado and chopped toasted almonds will add richness and crunch. Or make it as written and it will be simply wonderful.
